Europe’s leading AI startup Multiverse Computing has developed two of the world’s smallest yet high-performing artificial intelligence models, humorously named after the brains of a fly and a chicken.

The company says these compact systems can deliver chat, speech, and reasoning capabilities while being small enough to run on IoT devices without needing the internet.

Redefining the Boundaries of Small-Scale AI

Multiverse Computing, widely recognized for pushing the frontiers of artificial intelligence, has introduced a new family of AI models it calls the “Model Zoo.”

True to the playful branding, the company names these models after animal brains, underlining their unique size-to-performance ratio.

Unlike traditional large language models that demand vast computational power, these lightweight systems are designed to run efficiently on edge devices.

Their compactness opens the door to embedding AI into everyday objects such as home appliances, wearables, and even smart sensors — without constant cloud support.

“We can compress the model so much that they can fit on devices,” founder Román Orús told TechCrunch.
“You can run them on premises, directly on your iPhone, or on your Apple Watch.”

“We have a compression technology that is not the typical compression technology that the people from computer science or machine learning will do, because we come from quantum physics,” he described. “It’s a more subtle and more refined compression algorithm.”

What is ChickBrain?

The ChickBrain model is the smaller of the two. As the name suggests, it draws inspiration from the size of a chicken’s brain.

Despite its tiny architecture, ChickBrain is capable of handling basic conversational AI tasks and processing simple voice commands with remarkable efficiency.

This model is not built for heavy-duty reasoning but focuses on chat and speech-based interactions.

Its strength lies in making AI-powered assistants highly accessible to low-power devices, especially in scenarios where real-time responses are essential, and internet connectivity may be unreliable.

For example, ChickBrain could be embedded in household devices like smart kettles, thermostats, or washing machines, giving them conversational capabilities without relying on cloud servers.

What is SuperFly?

The SuperFly model takes inspiration from the comparatively tiny but complex fly brain.

While still extremely compact, SuperFly is a more advanced system compared to ChickBrain.

In addition to handling chat and voice tasks, SuperFly introduces reasoning capabilities, meaning it can process more nuanced queries and perform basic problem-solving functions.

Its design enables it to be deployed on edge devices that need a bit more intelligence without sacrificing efficiency.

SuperFly could power smart medical devices, industrial IoT sensors, or autonomous robots in environments with limited connectivity.

By providing reasoning ability in such a small package, Multiverse Computing positions SuperFly as a game-changer in edge AI applications.
