Bridging the Gap: DoT Secretary Neeraj Mittal Calls for More Telecom Unicorns in India

India's Department of Telecommunications (DoT) Secretary, Neeraj Mittal, has voiced a clear ambition for the country's burgeoning startup ecosystem: a significant increase in the number of telecom unicorns. Speaking on the sidelines of an event in Bengaluru, Mittal emphasized the critical need for more billion-dollar valuations in the telecom sector, highlighting the government's commitment to fostering such growth.

Mittal's call comes on the heels of the Union Cabinet's approval of the ₹1 lakh crore Research, Development, and Innovation (RDI) scheme. The DoT secretary expressed strong optimism that this substantial investment will provide a much-needed impetus to telecom startups, enabling them to scale, innovate, and ultimately achieve unicorn status. "We look forward to working closely with the scheme and startups," Mittal stated, underscoring the collaborative approach the DoT intends to take.

The telecom sector, traditionally dominated by large, established players, presents unique challenges for nascent companies. It is a capital-intensive industry with stringent regulatory frameworks and the need for significant infrastructure development. However, Mittal believes that government initiatives, coupled with India's vast digital penetration, create fertile ground for disruptive innovation.

India has witnessed an extraordinary digital transformation, boasting over 1.2 billion mobile subscribers and 1 billion broadband users. The government's ambitious BharatNet program is further expanding high-speed internet connectivity to 40,000 additional gram panchayats and 1.5 crore rural households, creating a massive addressable market for telecom-related innovations. From importing 75% of mobile devices, India is now exporting ₹1.8 trillion worth of devices annually, signifying a growing domestic manufacturing and design ecosystem.

The DoT's commitment to fostering a vibrant startup landscape extends beyond the new RDI scheme. Through initiatives like the Telecom Technology Development Fund (TTDF), the government has already supported 120 high-tech startups with nearly ₹500 crore in funding. These programs aim to reduce risks for startups, enable their growth, and encourage indigenous R&D in next-generation telecom technologies. The recent launch of "Samarth," a cutting-edge incubation program by C-DoT for telecom and ICT startups, further solidifies this support.

While India has celebrated a surge in unicorns across various sectors like fintech, e-commerce, and SaaS, the telecom space has seen fewer companies reach this coveted valuation. Mittal's statement serves as a clear directive to both entrepreneurs and investors: the telecom sector is ripe for disruption and offers significant opportunities for those who can develop innovative solutions addressing connectivity, infrastructure, and emerging technologies like 5G, 6G, AI, and IoT.

The DoT Secretary's vision aligns with the broader national goal of making India a global leader in telecommunications, moving beyond being just a consumer market to becoming a hub for telecom innovation and product development. With dedicated government backing and a rapidly expanding digital infrastructure, the stage is set for India to indeed nurture its next wave of telecom unicorns.
