From Compliance to Conscience: Mala Sharma Redefines Healthcare Quality

Mala Sharma is transforming healthcare compliance into a culture of accountability, patient safety, and sustainable quality through Qualitatva Consulting.

In an industry where precision is not just expected but essential, the difference between compliance and negligence can be life-altering.

For Mala Sharma, a seasoned expert with over three decades of experience in GxP, quality systems, and governance, this distinction is not theoretical—it is deeply personal and purpose-driven.

As the Founder and Director of Qualitatva Consulting, she is on a mission to reshape how organizations perceive and implement quality and compliance, especially in the pharmaceutical and healthcare sectors.

A Career Rooted in Quality and Responsibility

Mala Sharma’s professional journey spans more than 30 years, marked by a deep commitment to quality, compliance, and governance across diverse industries and international landscapes.

She began her career in 1996 with SGS, where she spent over a decade building a strong foundation in quality systems, audits, and regulatory frameworks.

Her next chapter unfolded at Novo Nordisk, where she served as a Responsible Person in the Indian affiliate until 2014, ensuring regulatory compliance and patient safety. She later transitioned into a quality leadership role, further strengthening her expertise in governance and oversight.

An IICA-certified Independent Director, Mala specializes in enhancing organizational oversight, risk management, and regulatory frameworks. Alongside her corporate contributions, she is also a QMS and GxP trainer, actively engaging in knowledge-sharing initiatives that help organizations and professionals build structured, scalable, and compliant systems.

The Moment That Sparked a Mission

While Mala’s career had always revolved around quality, the inspiration to start Qualitatva Consulting stemmed from a growing concern. Over the years, she observed that compliance was often reduced to a checklist rather than treated as a responsibility.

Around the same time, a phase of organizational restructuring in her career created the space to reflect more deeply on the gaps she had been observing in quality and compliance systems.

This concern turned into urgency in the wake of the 2025 cough syrup tragedy in India, where lapses in quality and oversight led to tragic loss of lives. The incident served as a stark reminder that compliance failures are not just operational issues—they have human consequences.

For Mala, this became a defining moment. It reinforced the need to move beyond audit-driven compliance and towards building a culture rooted in accountability, responsibility, and quality.

Qualitatva Consulting was founded with this purpose—to help organizations embed robust systems that prioritize patient safety and long-term sustainability.

Identifying the Gaps in a Complex Industry

The creation of Qualitatva Consulting was shaped by multiple gaps in the industry.

First, the increasing complexity of global regulatory requirements has made compliance more challenging, especially for emerging organizations that lack practical guidance.

Second, there is a disconnect between regulatory frameworks and their real-world implementation. Many organizations struggle to translate compliance requirements into systems that actually work.

A consistent gap Mala observed across organizations was the treatment of compliance as a checklist rather than a responsibility. Her approach is anchored in a non-negotiable belief: patient safety and patient rights cannot be compromised.

She is known for consistently pushing back against systems where the appearance of compliance takes precedence over patient outcomes. She finds it difficult to accept compliance approaches that prioritise documentation over actual accountability, as they reflect a lack of respect for patients.

Third, the rise of advanced therapies has introduced new challenges in quality management, making traditional approaches insufficient.

These realities highlighted the need for a more grounded, experience-led approach—one that helps organizations build systems that are not only compliant on paper but dependable in practice.

Services That Go Beyond Checklists

Qualitatva Consulting offers specialized services in audit, compliance, and governance, with a strong focus on GxP and quality management systems.

Its offerings include:

  • End-to-end audits
  • Regulatory compliance support
  • QMS design and implementation
  • Customized training programs

These are tailored to the needs of pharmaceutical and healthcare organizations.

What sets the company apart is its practical approach. Instead of relying on generic solutions, Qualitatva focuses on translating regulatory requirements into systems that function effectively in real-world environments.

Rather than remaining at a purely advisory level, the emphasis is on ensuring that systems hold up under operational pressures—where compliance is truly tested.

This ensures that compliance is not just achieved but sustained. By emphasizing a culture of quality and accountability, the firm enables organizations to move from reactive compliance to proactive excellence.

Building a Business from the Ground Up

Building Qualitatva Consulting came with several challenges. One of the initial hurdles was navigating business registration processes and establishing financial clarity.

Mala addressed this by partnering with a competent Chartered Accountant firm to manage financial compliance. She also leveraged AI-based tools to maintain real-time visibility and operational control, ensuring efficiency from the outset.

Another challenge was building a professional network from scratch. In an industry driven by trust, credibility takes time to establish.

Mala approached this strategically by creating thought leadership content using AI. By sharing insights on quality and compliance, she built a strong personal brand that attracted organic inquiries and business opportunities.

She also collaborated and freelanced with established industry players, gaining exposure and credibility during the early stages of growth. These efforts helped lay a strong foundation for the business.

Turning Points That Defined Growth

A significant turning point for Qualitatva Consulting came when thought leadership efforts began translating into tangible results.

What started as sharing perspectives evolved into inbound queries from organizations seeking expert guidance. These inquiries converted into meaningful engagements, validating the firm’s approach and expertise.

Another milestone was securing collaborations with established industry players. These partnerships strengthened credibility, expanded networks, and created a steady pipeline of opportunities.

Together, these developments marked the transition from a new venture to a trusted consulting partner.

A Vision for the Future

Looking ahead, Mala Sharma envisions a future where Qualitatva Consulting plays a larger role in shaping the industry ecosystem.

The company plans to scale with purpose, expanding beyond traditional consulting into areas that create broader impact.

One key focus is academia. By engaging with educational institutions, Qualitatva aims to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world compliance practices, preparing future professionals for industry challenges.

Another focus is collaboration with government and regulatory bodies. By working at a systemic level, the company seeks to contribute to stronger frameworks and policies that enhance quality standards across the pharmaceutical sector.

The overarching vision is to build a culture of quality that prioritizes accountability and long-term impact.

Redefining Compliance in a Changing World

In her view, advanced therapies are not just a scientific shift—they require a fundamental rethink of how safety and accountability are designed into systems.

In today’s evolving healthcare landscape, quality and compliance have become more critical than ever. Organizations need more than guidance—they need partners who understand the complexities of implementation.

Through Qualitatva Consulting, Mala Sharma is redefining compliance by focusing on practical execution, cultural transformation, and sustainability.

For her, the challenge is not just managing complexity, but ensuring that evolving therapies are matched by equally robust and practical safety systems.

Her journey reflects the power of experience and purpose. It demonstrates how a commitment to quality can influence not just organizations but the entire industry.

By moving beyond checklists and focusing on meaningful systems, she is helping build a safer, more accountable healthcare ecosystem.

For her, the real test of any system will always remain its ability to protect patients in practice, not just in principle.
