A Journey Shaped by Experience
For many professionals, a career is often defined by the industry they start in. But for Khyati Shah, the journey has been about constantly evolving and discovering new ways to create meaningful impact.
With over two decades in the financial industry, Khyati built a deep understanding of how businesses grow and the challenges that come with scaling them. Her early career included working with ICICI Bank in the SME segment, followed by CRISIL where she was part of the core team that helped build the SME ratings framework. What started as a small team of five eventually expanded to over a hundred professionals.
Her work did not stop there. She later became part of a two member core team that was responsible for establishing the platform for SMEs to list on the National Stock Exchange. This role also gave her close exposure to the startup ecosystem - founders navigating uncertainty, and the investors who support them.
Through these experiences, Khyati interacted closely with entrepreneurs, leadership teams, and growing organizations. She witnessed firsthand the pressures leaders face while building companies and managing teams. Over time, these interactions shaped her understanding not only of businesses, but also of human behaviour.
When a Sabbatical Became a Turning Point
After spending more than 20 years in the corporate world, Khyati decided to take a sabbatical. What started as a break eventually became the beginning of a new chapter.
During this time, she discovered the field of coaching. Curious about its potential, she enrolled with the International Coach Federation and began studying the discipline seriously. The more she learned, the more she realized how powerful coaching could be for leaders.
This experience led her to rethink her career path. Instead of returning to the demanding corporate routine, she chose to pursue a calling that allowed her to work closely with ambitious individuals and help them unlock their potential.
This decision eventually led to the creation of Katalist.
For Khyati, the motivation is simple. Every time a coachee achieves clarity, confidence, or success, she sees it as a shared victory. Watching individuals transform their thinking and navigate life’s challenges more effectively is what keeps her committed to the journey.
Understanding the Leadership Gap
While working with entrepreneurs and senior professionals, Khyati noticed a common pattern.
Leadership often comes with isolation.
Founders and senior leaders carry the responsibility of making difficult decisions, guiding teams, and managing expectations from multiple stakeholders. Yet, they rarely have a safe space to pause, reflect, and talk openly about their challenges.
In many cases, leaders hesitate to show vulnerability in front of their teams. They may not always have someone they trust to discuss sensitive decisions or uncertainties.
This is where coaching plays an important role.
Unlike mentoring or consulting, coaching does not offer ready made answers. Instead, it creates a space where individuals can step back, explore their thoughts, and view their situation from a new perspective. It allows leaders to think more clearly, make thoughtful decisions, and reconnect with their own strengths.
For Khyati, this gap became the foundation for building her practice.
What Katalist Brings to the Table
Katalist focuses on transformation coaching that helps individuals shift their mindset and develop deeper self awareness.
Many challenges people face in their professional or personal lives are rooted in their belief systems, past experiences, or limiting patterns of thinking. Coaching works by bringing these patterns to light and helping individuals rethink them.
Through structured conversations and reflective processes, Khyati helps leaders gain clarity about their goals, decisions, and priorities.
One of the unique strengths she brings to her practice is the combination of her financial background and her understanding of human behavior. Having worked closely with businesses and entrepreneurs for years, she understands the operational and strategic challenges leaders deal with. At the same time, her training as a coach allows her to explore the behavioural and emotional dimensions that influence leadership.
This blend allows her to connect with entrepreneurs in a way that is both practical and empathetic.
The Challenges of Building Awareness
Building a coaching practice in India comes with its own set of challenges.
The term coaching is often used loosely across different services. It may refer to academic coaching, fitness training, or even unrelated advisory services. Because of this, many people are still unfamiliar with what leadership coaching truly means.
Creating awareness has therefore been one of the biggest challenges in growing the practice.
Another challenge lies in reaching the right audience. Many professionals and entrepreneurs face leadership pressures but may not yet recognize coaching as a resource that can support them.
Additionally, coaching is a high value service, and organizations sometimes struggle to allocate budgets for it, especially when its benefits are not immediately visible.
For Khyati, addressing these challenges is an ongoing process. Building understanding and trust around the value of coaching requires patience and consistent effort.
A Milestone That Expanded the Horizon
A significant turning point in Khyati’s journey came when she was empaneled with BetterUp, an international coaching platform.
Through this association, she began working with senior leaders across multinational organizations around the world. The experience exposed her to diverse leadership challenges and perspectives from different industries and geographies.
Working with global leaders also helped refine her coaching approach and deepen her understanding of how leadership dynamics evolve across cultures.
This exposure strengthened her practice and reaffirmed the relevance of coaching for leaders navigating complexity.
The Vision for the Next Five Years
Looking ahead, Khyati’s focus remains firmly on India.
She believes there is immense untapped potential within the country’s SME and entrepreneurial ecosystem. At the same time, many founders operate without structured support systems that help them reflect, grow, and lead with clarity.
Her goal over the next few years is to deepen her work with SME entrepreneurs and become a trusted coaching partner for leaders who are building and scaling businesses.
By supporting founders in developing clarity and resilience, she hopes to contribute to stronger leadership across the ecosystem.
Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs
For those considering starting their own venture, Khyati shares a perspective shaped by both corporate and entrepreneurial experience.
Building something from scratch requires resilience. The journey can be demanding and, at times, lonely. But it is also a path filled with learning.
Every stage of building a company brings new challenges and opportunities to grow. Watching a venture evolve from an idea into something that stands on its own feet is deeply rewarding.
Her advice is simple. Stay grounded, stay focused, and keep learning.
