From Lockdown Learner to Community Uplifter: Prabhjot Singh and the Rise of Brilliant P

How a 17-year-old from Punjab turned lockdown learning into Brilliant P, a free platform empowering thousands through skill-based, inclusive education.

A Teen’s Vision That Sparked a Movement

At an age when most teens are navigating textbooks and peer pressure, Prabhjot Singh, a 17-year-old changemaker from Punjab, is running a growing education platform that has already impacted thousands of students across India and beyond.

He’s the founder of Brilliant P, a free learning initiative offering skill-based education in everything from programming to graphic design—with one mission in mind: to uplift underserved communities through accessible, practical education.

What makes this story remarkable isn’t just Prabhjot’s age or the reach of his platform—it’s how his journey began. Not in a classroom or boardroom, but from his home during the COVID-19 lockdown, with nothing but borrowed devices and unstoppable curiosity.

“I was just 13 and didn’t even own a mobile phone or laptop,” Prabhjot recalls. “But I had a deep desire to learn. When Sukrit Trust provided me a phone and later a laptop from Educate Punjab Project, apart from these, many organisations supported to run this initiative in a brilliant way. I made a promise to myself: if I learn something, I’ll make sure others can too.”

That promise became the heartbeat of Brilliant P.

From Kotkapura to the World: A Clarified Origin

While some assume his COVID journey started in Kotkapura, Faridkot (Punjab), Prabhjot clarifies that his real base during the pandemic was Kotkapura, Faridkot (Punjab), where he lived with his uncle and aunt after losing both parents.

“Ambala was where I lived earlier with my mom and grandmother. But I was six years old when I lost my parents and started living with my uncle and aunt. There were so many challenges faced during that time, but I saw opportunities in every situation. During the pandemic, I was in Kotkapura—that’s where I really started this mission,” he shares.

Amidst grief and uncertainty, he found purpose in online learning—and soon recognized that countless others were being left behind without access.

Spotting the Gap and Becoming the Bridge

During the pandemic, education inequality became painfully clear. Students from low-income families and rural areas struggled to access online learning—not because they lacked motivation, but because they lacked tools.

“Many students couldn’t join online classes because they didn’t have smartphones, laptops, or stable internet,” says Prabhjot. “That’s when I saw a massive gap and felt a responsibility to act.”

Most e-learning platforms catered to premium audiences or were paywalled. Prabhjot’s idea was radically different—a free platform designed for students who were often excluded from the digital classroom.

Inside Brilliant P: Skills, Support, and Solidarity

Brilliant P is more than a website with free courses—it’s a full ecosystem built on inclusion, mentorship, and empowerment.

The platform offers:

  • Free online courses in graphic design, Python, Java, video editing, French, Google Workspace, and more
  • Interactive community support, where students can ask questions, collaborate, and build connections
  • Mini internships, competitions, and hands-on activities to strengthen practical understanding
  • Mentorship recognition, where volunteers who teach others are honored and supported

“We don’t charge anything. No premium content. No hidden conditions,” Prabhjot says. “Whether you're studying from a village or a hostel room in the city, you belong here.”

He adds with humility,

“Many of the students who learn from us don’t even know I’m still a student myself. They call me ‘sir’ and treat me with the kind of respect usually given to elders. That humbles and motivates me even more.”

Pushing Through Without Resources or Recognition

Starting Brilliant P came with its share of struggles. From lacking devices to building everything alone, Prabhjot faced adversity at every step.

“I used to borrow phones just to learn. Later, I got support from Sukrit Trust and Educate Punjab Project, which gave me the tools I needed,” he says.

He handled content creation, live sessions, community management, and technical setup single-handedly—all while pursuing his own studies.

“There were people who didn’t take me seriously because of my age. But I just kept learning and proving myself, one step at a time.”

From Local Roots to Global Reach

What began as a humble initiative now boasts thousands of learners—from across Indian states and even abroad.

“The day I saw international students enrolling in our programs, I realized Brilliant P wasn’t just a small-town effort anymore. It had become something much bigger.”

One of the most rewarding moments came through heartfelt messages from learners who transformed their lives through the platform. Some began freelancing, others started teaching, and many found a sense of purpose through skill-based education.

Staying True to the Mission: Free, Accessible, Life-Changing

While some early drafts of his journey mentioned plans for paid services, Prabhjot clarified his vision:

“I’m not focused on launching a paid platform right now. Instead, I’m building a model where students not only learn for free but also gain skills that allow them to earn independently.”

His vision is simple yet powerful—help learners take control of their futures by equipping them with high-value, practical skills at no cost.

The Road Ahead: Offline Access and Deeper Impact

Looking to the future, Prabhjot plans to make Brilliant P even more accessible and impactful through:

  • A mobile app with offline learning for low-connectivity regions
  • More regional language content for inclusive engagement
  • A broader mentor network offering personalized guidance
  • Deeper outreach to marginalized communities still struggling with basic needs

“My mission is to reach the ones who are barely getting by. I want Brilliant P to help them access free education, build skills, and fulfill their needs with dignity,” he says.

Lessons for Young Changemakers

Prabhjot’s journey is not just inspiring—it’s instructive. Here are his key takeaways:

  1. Start small, but start now – He began with borrowed tools and borrowed vision, but that didn’t stop him from taking the first step.
  2. Solve real problems you’ve experienced – Brilliant P was born out of his own challenges, making the mission deeply personal.
  3. Focus on impact, not income – By keeping his platform free, he built trust—and trust built momentum.
  4. Don’t wait to be older to lead – At just 17, Prabhjot is influencing lives nationwide. Age doesn’t define vision or ability.
