From Rock Bottom to Rooftop Solutions
When Rajkumar Dhanraj founded Redsky Solar Technologies in January 2020, he had no idea that a global pandemic was just weeks away. Even more unexpected? That what began as a desperate attempt to rebuild his life would evolve into a fast-growing solar energy company helping hundreds of families and businesses in Chennai harness the power of the sun.
“I hit rock bottom in 2019—financially, emotionally, everything,” Rajkumar recalls. “I had three different business ideas. The first two didn’t click. The third was solar. I wasn’t sure about it, but I thought, let me give it a try.”
That decision would not only transform his life—it would light the path for hundreds of others seeking reliable, sustainable energy.
A Technical Mind Meets a Purpose-Driven Mission
Rajkumar’s professional roots lie in software and systems. Starting his career as an Accounts Receivables analyst in the medical billing space, he eventually moved into enterprise software, working as a JD Edwards technical developer and ERP implementation expert.
But when life reset his course, Rajkumar chose to build something with lasting value.
With a tech background and systems thinking, he approached solar not just as a product, but as a system to master. During the lockdowns, he immersed himself in online training programs offered directly by manufacturers, even building his own test setups and sandbox environments.
“That tough beginning shaped my approach—hands-on, resilient, and always focused on getting better.”
Cracking the Market: One Solar Street Light at a Time
Breaking into solar, an industry rife with technical complexity and customer skepticism, wasn’t easy.
“I had the skills but didn’t know how to reach customers or build trust,” Rajkumar admits.
A friend’s advice to start with solar street lights and DC lighting systems became a turning point. These grassroots projects helped him earn trust and credibility.
“I realized most players were just selling products. They weren’t educating customers or showing up when things went wrong. That’s where I saw a clear gap and a real opportunity.”

Building a Brand on Trust, Not Shortcuts
Today, Redsky Solar offers a wide range of solutions—on-grid systems, hybrid models, and solar-powered street lights. But Rajkumar believes the real differentiator isn’t the tech—it’s the service.
“We don’t cut corners, and we never miss a service call,” he says. “It’s not just about selling a system. It’s about making sure it performs and that the customer feels supported.”
Their unwavering commitment to service has built Redsky’s reputation in Chennai’s growing solar market.
Milestones That Matter
The journey has been anything but linear, yet Redsky’s growth has been marked by consistency and key milestones.
One major achievement? 100 rooftop solar installations in a single year.
“I started with nothing—no capital, no investors, just the willingness to figure things out. When we hit 100 installations, it proved that the slow, consistent approach works.”
Rajkumar credits his family’s support as a pillar through the early days of uncertainty.
What’s Next: Scaling with Integrity
Having established a solid presence in the residential space, Redsky now has its sights set on the commercial and industrial (C&I) market.
“We’ve been studying the space and preparing to scale. But we’re not rushing. Quality, trust, and learning will guide our growth.”
His five-year vision: A well-rounded solar company with a trusted name in both residential and commercial sectors.
“We just want to keep getting better—technically, operationally, and in how we serve our customers.”
Lessons for Aspiring Entrepreneurs
Rajkumar’s journey is proof that you don’t need it all figured out at the start. You just need the courage to begin.
Here are three key lessons he shares:
- Start with what you know, but don’t fear the unknown.
“I used the lockdown to educate myself. That gave me the confidence to get out there.” - Be consistent, even when it’s slow.
“It took time, but small wins added up. One project led to another.” - Always deliver what you promise.
“In this business, trust is everything. If you say you’ll show up, show up.”

Final Thoughts: Lighting a Path for Others
What started as a recovery project has now become a respected clean energy brand trusted by over 100 clients. Redsky Solar is more than a company—it’s a story of resilience, purpose, and community impact.
Rajkumar Dhanraj didn’t just power homes. He powered his own comeback—and in doing so, he’s lighting the way for other dreamers to rise, rebuild, and create something meaningful.
