Founded by Swati Sharma, an educator and mother with a passion for inclusivity, this nonprofit organization has transformed countless lives through comprehensive support, therapy, and skill-building programs. Under Swati’s determined leadership, Rainbow Society is redefining how society perceives and supports differently-abled individuals, helping them lead fulfilling and self-reliant lives.
Swati’s journey began with her son, who was born in 1988 with a rare combination of congenital abnormalities. Facing an overwhelming lack of support, she embarked on a lifelong mission to bring change. Having pursued a B.Ed. in Special Education, a diploma in Autism Spectrum Disorder, and certifications in ADHD, Learning Disorders, and Child Psychology, Swati equipped herself to advocate and educate others. She held roles as an in-charge and principal of a special school, gaining invaluable experience that would shape her dream project—the Rainbow Society for Differently-Abled.
Her commitment to creating accessible therapeutic services under one roof took form in 2015 when Rainbow Society became a registered NGO. With no government grants, the center relies solely on donations, yet it flourishes due to the hard work of a dedicated team and community support.
Rainbow Society began with a vision to provide holistic support and therapies, all in one space, to differently-abled children. Today, it serves 85 students, supported by 20 trained staff, including speech and physiotherapists, special educators, counseling psychologists, and yoga teachers. For families with financial constraints, Rainbow Society offers free training sessions, driven by Swati’s commitment to accessibility and equality.
A standout initiative at Rainbow Society is its collaboration with Craftizen Foundation and Accenture’s Green Skill Program. Through this, 40 students engage in meaningful work, crafting eco-friendly products like Gulal, incense, and other items from recycled flowers and paper. These activities have not only empowered students but have also provided a source of sustainable income and pride. With innovative skill-building programs, Rainbow Society emphasizes real-world training, enabling differently-abled individuals to gain independence and confidence.
Rainbow Society’s impact is deeply inspiring. In 2019, it organized a successful summer camp, kickstarting an era of all-inclusive therapy programs. Students from the organization have achieved remarkable milestones: one student won multiple gold and silver medals in international Special Olympics, and another reached advanced levels in classical music, defying stereotypes surrounding Autism Spectrum Disorder. Furthermore, seven students have secured employment with Mitti Café at Lucknow Airport, while another found a position at Reliance Smart Bazaar.
Six of Rainbow Society’s children have even transitioned to mainstream schools, underscoring the power of early intervention and holistic support. The organization’s achievements have drawn recognition from prestigious institutions like IIM Kolkata and Janhit Jagran, which named Swati’s concept among India’s top twelve impactful ideas.
Swati’s vision extends beyond current initiatives. She is determined to open a café staffed by students, creating employment opportunities within an inclusive environment. She also aims to establish a lifelong residence for senior students, ensuring they can live with dignity and independence. Her unwavering commitment to fostering self-reliance among differently-abled individuals drives the organization forward and inspires those around her.
The path to building Rainbow Society has not been easy. Swati faced significant challenges, including limited social acceptance, lack of early intervention services, and insufficient resources within mainstream education systems. Many schools do not provide shadow teachers or necessary therapies, making integration difficult. Despite these hurdles, Swati has worked tirelessly to increase awareness, conducting training sessions for parents and educators to advocate for the differently-abled community.
For Swati, every Monday brings renewed energy and purpose. Her students are her motivation, their innocence and positivity fueling her drive to make Rainbow Society a place of true transformation. Through projects like the Green Skilling Program, where students craft products such as coasters, baskets, and scented candles, Swati channels her creativity into opportunities for growth and self-sufficiency for her students.
With demand rising for products made by Rainbow Society’s students, the organization is gearing up to expand its offerings. Plans to open a café and a permanent residence are already in motion, a testament to Swati’s dedication to lifelong empowerment for differently-abled individuals.
