Controversies

It had been in several controversies; its fairness cream, for instance. The face cream called ‘Fair & Lovely’ got into trouble recently due to promoting white beauty and insulting the brown color, so much so, that it had to change its name to ‘Glow & Lovely’. Priyanka Chopra, a darker skin toned actress was seen in a mini TV commercial alongside Neha Dhupia, who has a fairer complexion. This was very criticized for perpetuated racism and lowering the self-esteem of girls who were more on the darker side of the tone.

Also, in one of its other ads for the Brooke Bond Red label tea, they gave a negative perspective of Kumbh Mela, which wasn’t acceptable by many people. Unilever had to then face the public backlash against the same. It also resulted in a hashtag trending on Twitter, #boycotthindustanunilever.
