Preserving a Heritage: The Genesis of Parzor Foundation

In 1999, Prof. Shernaz Cama embarked on a groundbreaking mission with UNESCO’s support to create the Parzor Foundation, a project aimed at preserving the unique culture and heritage of the Parsi Zoroastrian community. What began as a documentation initiative transformed into a comprehensive social movement reaching local and international communities. Under her guidance, Parzor expanded beyond mere documentation, touching lives through exhibitions, books, and films. Among these contributions was the first film on Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw and a remarkable series of exhibitions in 2016, which showcased Parsi culture and history on an unprecedented scale.

The Legacy of Innovation and Cultural Rejuvenation

Prof. Cama’s journey is one marked by resilience and ingenuity, grounded in her rich academic background and her own deep-rooted connection to Zoroastrianism, which began while completing her PhD on Blake and Zoroastrianism in London. Working closely with UNESCO, she set out to build awareness and pride in Parsi heritage, especially among younger generations. Today, Parzor collaborates with leading Indian and international universities, even offering an academic credit program on Parsi Zoroastrian Cultural and Heritage Studies through TISS in Mumbai. This initiative aims to educate the global community on Parsi values, emphasizing heritage as a valuable link to history and identity.

Strengthening Community Through Heritage and Education

Parzor Foundation has played a vital role in the preservation and revival of traditional Parsi crafts like weaving and embroidery, which were in danger of extinction. Prof. Cama’s initiatives, such as the revival of Navsari’s historic Meherji Rana Library, which houses rare manuscripts, demonstrate her dedication to maintaining Zoroastrian intellectual heritage. The library, once in decline, has been revived to serve as an academic treasure for researchers worldwide. These projects offer local artisans skill development and entrepreneurship opportunities, creating avenues for youth to continue traditional crafts and transform them into profitable businesses. Renowned designer Ashdeen Lilaowala, a Parzor alumnus, is a shining example of the impact of these initiatives

Pioneering Change through Health and Humanitarian

Beyond cultural preservation, Parzor has made strides in improving community health. In 2013, Prof. Cama launched the Jiyo Parsi program, backed by the Ministry of Minority Affairs, to address the Parsi community’s demographic challenges. This pioneering advocacy and medical program has since supported the birth of over 550 babies, offering not just IVF aid but also financial assistance for elderly dependents, addressing the community’s unique needs on multiple fronts. Additionally, Prof. Cama spearheaded relief efforts during the pandemic, mobilizing medical supplies to Iran’s Zoroastrian community when it was severely affected by COVID-19.

Honoring Tradition and Building Global Recognition

Prof. Cama has led Parzor in many international endeavors, including the Everlasting Flame International Programme, an event that brought together the Government of India, Iran’s National Museum, and British institutions to celebrate Zoroastrianism’s global influence. Her initiatives have received multiple accolades, including the prestigious UNESCO Seal of Excellence in 2008 and 2012 for reviving authentic Parsi embroidery. In 2022, she was honored with the World Zarathushti Community Service Award at the World Zoroastrian Congress, New York, for her impactful social and humanitarian contributions.

A Legacy of Service and Determination

Prof. Cama’s journey with Parzor is an inspiring story of resilience, anchored in her commitment to making a lasting difference. Despite financial challenges, she remains dedicated to expanding Parzor’s impact, building a line of succession, and empowering her team to carry forward the organization’s legacy. As Parzor looks ahead, Prof. Cama envisions its growth as a source of pride and knowledge for generations to come.
